I've got 3 drafts that I'm working on...they'll be up eventually. But for now I do want to post something.
So now it's the time of year for...Halloween. Everyone celebrates it differently. Some people go over the top and decorate their house like others would do for Christmas (there's this house in my neighborhood that does that...well, two really...but it's creepy and cool at the same time) Others more or less shun anyone mentioning the holiday. My family just goes along with it. I see it as an opportunity to get some free candy (and if we actually ever bothered doing anything, it would also be a chance to scare some kids...well, teens actually...scaring little kids is wrong)
I know that some people (if they ever read this) would think badly of me for saying this, but I still go out for the candy. I plan to this year, and I'm 18.
I like trick-or-treating. Not just because of the candy (I get candy weekly, but I always get some variety that I never would have otherwise) but because I get to dress up as something silly.
I was a cat last year. It was really cold, so I just wore some dark jeans and a black sweater and drew the nose and whiskers on and made a tail out of a feather boa. People still gave me candy. I have no idea what I'll be this year, but I'm definitely going to have green hair (I got a spray color thing that I'm not going to waste)
I'm pretty sure I've said this before, but there's a small part of me that's always going to be a kid. I'm always going to love dressing up. If I get to be a princess, or a fairy, or a cat, or something else that I want to try, then I'm going to be happy. And really, with society Halloween is about the only time you can get away with it.
Yeah, you don't actually need to go trick-or-treating to wear a costume. A lot of people go to parties or some other event, but my family hasn't done that in years. We haven't gone anywhere in years. Seriously, in the ten years we've stayed in this house, I have been to two parties. Two parties. That's it. We've gone to very few church events. I can probably count on one hand the number of times. We used to go to multiple a year when we stayed in California...I miss it.
Um, I think I'm rambling a bit...but I go trick-or-treating because I actually have a use for my costume then.
And another thing about the candy: I've got two little siblings at 7 and 5 years of age. They go around the cul-de-sac and they're already tired and cold. They don't get much candy. Roughly half of my candy goes to them. I don't eat anything with peanuts in it (have I ever mentioned my dislike of anything nutty?) and they seem to love it, so I give that and quite a few other sweets to them.
But there's also another reason I like Halloween. I get exercise. I usually sit around on my butt all day every day, with my daily exercising consisting of going up and down stairs a few times. On Halloween (especially if I'm with my younger brother, the 16-year-old one) I run around until I have cramps and I don't feel like moving the next day.
And in more recent years, I found that I love that feeling. I'm not very physically active, and I've never been a particularly good runner, but somewhere along with growing inches at a time I also seemed to have gotten better at running and doing physical activities. And I like the feeling of being able to run (especially barefoot...shoes and socks are awful) with nothing to stop me.
Also, because I have a longer stride than most people do (meaning that for every step I take, other people take a step and a half or two steps) and running means I get to go as fast as I want without having to slow down. I especially love this.
