Taking a look at some of the "worst" characters in Super Smash Bros. Brawl

So, currently taking a small break from playing Super Smash Bros. Brawl with my sister. Yes, the one who loves complaining and gets frustrated with almost every game she plays (she wanted to throw Spyro away earlier, but our mom called her)

It's not very often that we get to spend some time together where we're actually agreeing on something and we're not pissed off at each other for whatever reason. So it's a nice change.

'Course, that's mostly because I set it to teams so I can't kill her ;)

No, seriously, I love the game. I'm at the very least decent with any character I play, but I'm not bad at any of them.

My best characters would be Peach, Zelda, Samus (especially Zero Suit Samus, she is awesome), Olimar (yes, I said Olimar), Ice Climbers, and Pit.

Funny thing, all the characters are great, and at the same time awful. You just need to learn how to play with them.

I used Peach because I fell in love with the frying pan/golf club/tennis racket attack in Super Smash Bros. for the Gamecube, as well as her ability to float around for a short while. That, and she's a girl. Enough said there, I should think.

Zelda, also because she's a girl, but also because using her B attack (whatever it's called, I have no idea for the names) saved me several times because of someone firing a super-charged Samus beam thingy at me. It was awesome when it backfired on them and they were shocked :) And changing into Sheik was cool as well.

And Samus, again, girl. Samus with her armor on is a pretty decent character, so long as you know how to use her, but I love Zero Suit Samus way better. I've won so many games using her.

Olimar I used because everyone who played the game with me complained about how he sucked. I tried him, found that he's actually pretty good, and now he's one of the top characters I like playing as. And his final smash move...awesome.

Ice Climbers I've always loved, even in the Gamecube game. I know that none of the other people I know don't like them because without the girl you're completely useless, but I still like them. For starters because there's two of them, and they can both pick up an item and throw/use it, and if the boy is asleep and the girl isn't, you can still control her a bit. Yeah, their final smash move sucks a bit, but it got Toon Link when we had to unlock him.

Pit. I love this guy mostly because he's an angel. Or has wings and looks like one at the very least. And because I like changing his color to black and making him look like a dark angel...anyways, he's pretty great. I think mostly because his B+up move (again, don't know the name) is probably the best one I've seen yet, if used correctly.

Eh, was going to stop here, but I'll talk some more about some other characters. Continue reading for the others :)

Looking on Google for "super smash bros brawl worst characters" brings up some pretty interesting results. I found a top ten list that lists Olimar as the worst, so I think I'll talk a little bit more about him.

But first, I think I should explain something. I play Brawl without using most B moves. I just move around and press A the entire time, almost never B. Just about the only time when I do use them is in a perfect situation, or whatever B+up move to save myself (with the exceptions of Jigglypuff and Yoshi, since they don't help you when you're falling off the edge) I'm not sure how relevant this is, but I feel that I should say it. And while I look at this top ten list, I'm just going to state whatever is on my mind, good or bad. So yeah.

Olimar. I really don't see why so many people don't like him. Yes, his attacks are mostly dependant on the Pikmin, but really, it takes at worst a second or two for me to pull them all out when he has absolutely none of them. Plus, depending on the color of the Pikmin, you can deal a lot of damage. I sent Peach flying off the map earlier when I hit her with a red one. Throwing them sideways with the B+left/right move also does a bit of damage, and it's pretty helpful in some cases. And his B+up move is amazing. I always make sure I've got all of the Pikmin, mostly because of reflex, so the reach for this is pretty cool. It doesn't go straight up, but rather diagonally, and a lot of times that's actually been more beneficial than what it would've been if it were straight up. Especially earlier, where I used that to break the orb things to get his final smash move. And his final smash is awesome, because not only does it do a bit of damage while they're off-screen, chances are that if they're hit by the rocket when it comes back down, they're probably flying off the screen somewhere.

So really, he's not bad. You just need to know how to use him. And believe me when I say that I'm not an expert at using him. I just press buttons and make things work somehow. So for the people who actually know how to use him properly, he's probably even better for them.

Next on that top ten list is Princess Peach. I don't understand this one. Maybe because I've been playing with her for probably the longest, but still. She can float (which has saved me a few times) if you continue holding up, which is sometimes more beneficial than her taking out her umbrella. And she can attack while floating too, which is a plus for me. Pressing A+left/right brings out a frying pan, golf club, or tennis racket, which can be very damaging, and is very worth it to me. And her B+down move where she plucks turnips out of the ground is fun. When my older brother plays with us (which doesn't happen much) he tends to put off all the items, which does spoil the game a bit. But with that move, I've plucked out a Mr. Saturn before, as well as a bomb. That was fun :) Her B+left/right move is great. It deals enough damage for me to be satisfied, even if it does get annoying hearing her after a while. Her final smash move puts everyone to sleep and brings out a bunch of peaches. Sometimes this has been very helpful, sometimes not. It all really depends on the game I was playing.

Number three on the list is Ganondorf. I don't like Ganondorf, and he's probably one of my worse characters to use, but that's only because I rarely use him (did earlier though, because I chose random) He frustrates me sometimes because he's slow, but he is strong enough to make up for it to me. And his B move doesn't bother me too much, because like I said I use mostly the A button. I'm not going to say that he's a terrible character to play with, because my younger brother is decent at using him, but I know that he's not my best character. Oh, and when he's tiny he sounds absolutely hilarious when you press B :) That's probably my favorite thing about him. I had no idea what his final smash move was, but I did get him again on random taking a break from writing this post, and it looks like he turns into some pig thing and charges. Overall, pretty helpful for me, since my sister was being lazy and useless :)

Next is Ice Climbers. Like I said, people complain about them being useless when the one dies, but if you know how to use them then the chances for that is greatly reduced. I've been using them since the Gamecube version, and I love them. I think I've actually annoyed my siblings using them because I keep beating them :) And actually, they're not useless when the girl dies. Far less useful, and pretty much worthless for the B+up move, but not useless. When you have both, that move can really save you. I love using their B move, which sends ice on the floor to attack your enemy, because even though it doesn't do much damage, it tends to slow them down for me. And B+down is helpful, because it momentarily freezes them. Their final smash isn't very helpful in all circumstances. A giant iceberg can only do so much. But it does push the enemies out of the way, and if you know how to grab them and fling them off the side of the map (sometimes killing them if you do it right) then it can be pretty helpful.

Next is Jigglypuff. I can see why people don't like her, same as Ganondorf, but again, I don't use her much. She isn't very strong, true, but that doesn't really stop me. She's fast enough, and she can fly enough times that I find it very helpful. Yes, I'm frustrated with her Sing attack (B+up, and the only reason I know that is because I play the Pokemon games) because it doesn't do anything that would help me when I'm off the edge, and it doesn't work very well when I use it, but my solution is to not use it, and try something else. She's a character that really works better pressing A than B. And her final smash move blows her up and moves the other characters out of the way, and near the end it does seem to do damage. People complain about this as well, because on larger maps it can be avoided. But then, a lot of the final smash moves can be avoided (Ike's is pretty much worthless unless you get a direct hit, and it's in very close range, unlike some of the other smash moves that can have a longer range) and on smaller maps, it almost guarantees for a kill. So it's actually decent.

Lucas. I haven't played with him in a very long while, so my memory on moves is a bit fuzzy, so that might affect this a bit. He's not a bad character, much like Ness, you just need to know how to use him. Spamming the A button here is actually pretty fun to do. And his B+up move was useless to me (back on the Gamecube game, when there was no Lucas, just Ness, actually) but with a little practice it works pretty well, and I can at least manage to sort of get it right to send myself up when I'm falling. Still practicing on that though. And his final smash I remember as being pretty decent as well. So really, you just need to know how to use him.

Haha, next one is hilarious to me: Luigi. I don't understand this one at all. In Brawl and on the Gamecube, I've never really liked playing as him, even though I'm decent with him, because my sister likes him. He's got that weird walk attack thing that I still don't know how to do, and it's annoyed me enough times for me to consider it effective. And his B moves might suck (to me, they almost all do anyways) but really, spamming the A button is a strategy that works for me across all the characters. Somehow. His final smash...weird, but effective. More effective than Peach's, anyways. Causes a decent amount of damage when I play, anyways.

Okay, okay, I have to ask. Who put Toon Link on the list? Seriously, I don't like playing with him that much, but how is he bad? You should see my younger brother as him! He's amazing with him! Sure, he's somewhat annoying when you attack with him, but all the characters are after a while. He's actually pretty useful if you're spamming A. And yeah, he's just pretty much a clone of the regular Link, but still. I loved playing Windwaker with my younger brother (he played the story, I was the Tingle Tuner :) Never wanted to change that, it was so much fun) and I enjoy his cartoon-y style. But still, if you're going to put him on a top ten worst character list, you might as well throw Link on there as well. Not that either should be there, in my opinion...

R.O.B. Hm. Okay. Um, not one of my favorite characters, but somehow not one of my worst ones. He's harder for me to use because I play so little as him (it is a guy, right?) but he's a pretty decent character. Again, you just need to know how to use him.

Last one on that list is Pokemon Trainer. Here I half agree, half disagree. Most of what my particular problem is that when you die, it switches you to the next Pokemon, and it takes a few seconds to change to the next one (and if you need to switch two ahead, even longer) My particular favorite out of the three given Pokemon is Ivysaur. I'm not sure if it's because I like the grass starters first, fire second, and water last (with the exception of the sixth generation, where fire and grass are switched, and the fifth generation, where they all suck but I chose Snivy because I'm used to picking grass and my brother chose Oshawatt, but otherwise it woud've been water, grass, then fire) or because it's fun spamming A with it, but I find Ivysaur easier to use than Squirtle or Charizard. I know that my younger brother loves using Charizard, and he's better than I am, and given time he could master Squirtle as well. But really, three characters in one is a blessing and a curse. More moves and strategies to work out (if you're interested in that, which I'm not really) and more variety, all of which could work out very well. But because they're not all accessible at the same time, it's also very limited.

That's all for that particular list. Right now I'm going to go see if I can play some more Brawl with my sister, and I might do another post on other characters someday. Not sure if I will, but I might. Writing this has made me want to play as some of the so-called 'worst' characters that I'm not so good at, even if only to see how well I really can play them. So we'll see.
