What exactly is laziness? I know that I generally see it defined as someone who is unwilling to do something. (Also 'teenagers' by some, but...actually, if you take a look at it, I think teenagers sometimes do more work than adults. Not always, but sometimes. Of course, I also have my own definitions of 'work', so my judging may be off somewhat)
Taken from the Merriam Webster dictionary website, the definition for lazy is:
1: a: disinclined to activity or exertion : not energetic or vigorous
b: encouraging inactivity or indolence < a lazy summer day >
2: moving slowly : Sluggish
3: droopy, lax < a rabbit with lazy ears >
4: placed on its side < lazy E livestock brand >
5: not rigorous or strict < lazy scholarship >
...But, I see it a bit differently. Keep reading if you want to see why.
I mean, yes, I do agree with those definitions. But that's a dictionary defining it. If you ask a lot of different people, chances are you're going to get a lot of different answers.
For example, my friend basically defined laziness (when applied to a person) as someone who sits on their butt doing nothing all day.
And while I do agree with that, I also have different meanings for the word, just as much as the dictionary has more than one meaning.
See, I was going on a bit about how lazy I felt because I didn't really do any thing productive with my life, and how lazy my family was, despite their energy. And I basically called everyone lazy, at some level.
Then my friend brought up his definition and said that there are some people who wouldn't be able to sit down and do anything for the entire day, whereas others would love to do just that (haha, me and my family and my friend for the latter)
So really, that's what inspired this post. Because I didn't mean to imply that every last person would love to sit on their butts. I know that some people can't do that. For some, it really would drive them insane. Some people just have to do something.
I was trying to say that everyone is lazy at some level because most people nowadays that I pay attention to would much rather look for shortcuts in whatever they're doing than sticking to other, more time-consuming manners.
*Just so you know, I'm sure that not everyone does this. It's just an observation made by me. And since I don't pay attention to too many people, it's probably not the best one either.*
Anyways, I know that some people aren't really that lazy if you look at it the way my friend does, or how the dictionary does, but to me people are lazy if they're looking for shortcuts. They're lazy if they don't do anything. They're lazy if they'll do something, but don't really do it (or don't feel motivated to do it and only do it because of some incentive) They're lazy if they don't put a 'full' effort into something. There are others too, but these are the 'main' definitions for me.
So yeah, the dictionary definition that a lot of people probably go by is in there. But there are others too.
See, I consider myself really lazy, and all those definitions apply to myself (and my family...) I'm always looking for shortcuts because I hate putting too much effort into anything (which is why most of the stuff I've drawn is incomplete and will likely remain so) And a lot of the time I'll do something, like chores, but that's only because it's expected of me and I get paid to do so. I don't want to do it, but I do it anyways. I'd do a better job if I wanted to do it, but since I don't want to, I take a shortcut and don't put a full effort into it.
And even if you think that my definitions are wrong, I don't. You can call it "technological advances" or whatever else you want, but to me electronics like computers and tvs are just making people more and more lazy. Yes, it's very helpful and makes our lives a lot easier (especially when it comes to medical areas) and less time consuming, but to me it makes us lazier too.
And if you really need me to prove my point there, try going a week or so without internet or tv, with the exceptions being if you need those for work (I'm saying 'internet' here instead of 'computers' or 'phones' because I find that both can sometimes be helpful, and I've only really had to go without internet and tv) I assure you, it's harder than it may seem, even for people who say that they don't need any of those things.
I'm someone who says that I don't rely too much on the internet. But in all truth, it's actually really annoying for me whenever my internet gets grounded, because then I don't have too much to do (I usually loan books from the library and read them pretty fast when I have no internet, since internet is just one big distraction for me. And I don't have too many games to do that I actually can on any regular basis, seeing as how often I get disturbed) When this happens, I tend to find myself lying on my bed, half-asleep sometimes (I don't get much sleep at night, so it's not too surprising that I'm so tired through the day) because I'm just left alone with my thoughts and have nothing else to do (actually plenty, I just don't want to do anything else) The internet might not be much to me, but it's still more than most other things.
So that's why I feel lazy, and why I view other people as lazy too, even if they're putting in more effort than a lot of people together would. Because in the end I think we'll just end up looking for shortcuts, and there are probably only a handful of people who would put in a full effort (my definition of a 'full effort' is probably more demanding than yours is) and even then, they'll probably also use shortcuts. To me, this is how it is.
Of course, I'm not entirely sure how much sense this will make to anyone reading. It makes sense to me, because it's in my head, but translating things in my head to writing is very hard sometimes. So hopefully that did make some sense to you. And if you think differently than I do and disagree entirely and refuse to change your views, good for you (and no, I'm not being sarcastic here. I'm being sincere) It's the same as two people looking at something (like a fractal) and seeing something entirely different in the end. Different minds come up with different things.
And if you think differently than I do, but you also see this as a different perspective and find it interesting, good for you as well. I like talking with people about seemingly random things (and sometimes, quite ordinary things) and looking at it from a lot of different ways and coming up with something a lot more interesting, if not confusing. Maybe you do too. Maybe your mind is similar to mine, and this all made perfect sense to you like it does to me. If it does, I would love to talk a bit. I'm bored and would love it if I had someone else to talk to (me being shy and somewhat antisocial in real life makes for a boring life, unfortunately. Which is why internet is important to me, because I can actually talk and get along with other people. I hate it a bit, but it's a lot easier than trying to have and keep friends that I actually have to talk to face-to-face on a regular basis)
And now to wrap this thing up. I didn't really intend on the post being as long as it is, but sometimes when I'm thinking about something I tend to ramble a bit. But I hope you find this interesting. And if it doesn't make much sense, it's either because my mind is different from yours, or because I've gotten barely any sleep over the past few nights, and combined with sneezing too many times to count today alone from allergies, and the sudden heat, my head's a bit fuzzy and I'm not sure how well I'm actually thinking in terms of making sense. If that makes any sense.
So, how do you view laziness as?
